Launch event Eco Fair a great success
The independent High Barnet Green Home Zone, a local volunteer resident group, launched on Saturday with an Eco Fair at the Hyde Room, Chipping Barnet Library. More than 300 residents attended the event, as well as Barnet councillors Duncan McDonald, Bridget Perry and Wendy Prentice.
Catalysed by local residents Gordon Miller and Sarah Challice, the High Barnet Green Home Zone has been formed as a not for profit Community Interest Company. The Zone’s objective is to assist some 2,250 homeowners in High Barnet to reduce their energy use and develop their environmental awareness.
“We were delighted with the turn out,” said Miller. “It turned out to be a rainy day, which made it all the more pleasing that so many residents took the time to come and find out about our aims to assist everyone to save energy and money, and become more environmentally aware for the general benefit of the local community.”
Barnet Council supported the Eco Fair. The borough’s waste and recycling team were on hand to offer residents advice and information. The Energy Saving Trust also attended, bringing along a driving simulator that proved popular with many. Crafts, face painting and a drawing competition ensured local children found plenty to entertain them.
Other attendees included Friends of the Earth, Global Action Plan's EcoTeams, C-Mobile, Qubic, Walkit and Velux, who sponsor the Zone.. Following the launch event, homeowners will be offered free home energy consultations. Miller says the current focus is on assisting residents but in time there will be outreach to schools and businesses too.
